lazyrenaissanceman asked: I have a gray suit with light gray pinstripes, I was thinking about wearing a maroon tie, white shirt, brown belt, and brown shoes with it. Good or bad?

The way I am imagining this it sounds awesome, but I can’t see it and don’t know the exact shade of brown or gray so it’s hard to tell. I’m actually a big fan of pairing gray and brown together though I know it can be kind of controversial, but most of the time I think it works really well as long as it’s not too much?

This, as an example, is almost too much:

But that might also be because the suit is more of a cool gray and the shirt is a really yellow brown and I don’t love them together.

This is a good look:

Which also seems really similar to what you are talking about with the pinstripes, shoes and belt. I think a maroon tie could only make it more great. I say go for it!

GREY SCALE: A GUY'S GUIDE TO GREY SUITS

gentlemensquare:

Grey doesn’t always have to be bland or gloomy.  This spring/summer, the grey suit is a staple in every man’s wardrobe.

Grey is a great color on every man’s skin tone and will go with almost any color and is the  perfect background for a pop of color, a look that is always popular during spring/summer.  Avoid looking outdated with a slim fitting silhouette and a shorter jacket. The best part about it?  There is a certain type of “grey” for every occasion.

A lighter grey suit like this Canali is perfect for the warm summer weather and is a bit more of a daring, fun look.

This look from DKNY is a good, medium grey shade that can be great for day or night.  Dress it up with darker accessories, or make it more casual and daytime appropriate with pops of color.

This dark grey suit by Louis Vuitton would be perfect for a summer evening.  Pairing it with darker accessories like this cobalt tie dresses it up more.  Blue and grey is always a winning combination.

HOW TO WEAR THIS TREND:

Do:

  • Find the right kind of grey for your ocassion. Dark grey for formal/nighttime. Light grey for casual/daytime.
  • Pair with pops of color
  • Stick to a fitted silhouette.

Don’t:

  • Wear a suit that is too big
